Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In 2002, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops ratified the Charter for Protection of Children and Young People in response to the scourge of clergy sexual abuse incidents across the country. The Diocese of Allentown fully adopted the Charter norms and developed a culture of safety for our parishes, schools, and ministries. This culture of safety resulted in the creation of the Safe Environment Office and in 2019, the Secretariat for Youth Protection.

Tasked with ongoing development and primary oversight of safe environment policies, procedures, and training for clergy, religious, employees, and volunteers in the Diocese of Allentown, the Secretariat for Catholic Health, Human Services, and Youth Protection continues our efforts to be a welcoming and safe place for children, families, and vulnerable adults. Our practices are a model for other faith communities and organizations.

As parents place their trust in our parishes, schools, and ministries, I am proud of the work we have accomplished to continue to keep children and vulnerable adults safe. Our safe environment requirements for clergy, employees, volunteers, and contractors are rigorous and comprehensive.

The Diocese of Allentown community is deeply committed to safe environment and will always seek to strengthen our knowledge and training of safe environment practices. It is the responsibility of each one of us to protect children and vulnerable adults in our care.

I pray for the intercession of our Blessed Mother to continue to give each of us the strength and inspiration in our work to protect children and vulnerable adults.

Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Alfred A. Schlert, D.D., J.C.L.
Bishop of Allentown
